Kung Fu
Kung Fu refers to a variety of Chinese martial arts that originated from ancient Asian customs. Martial arts were originally created for self-defense purposes, but today many people practice kung fu to build physical and mental strength.
Kung Fu for Kids
Kung Fu is Fun and Cool
Fun is the root of happiness, especially for children. Kids typically find Kung Fu classes fun because learning and practicing the moves feel like playing. Most kids really enjoy making offensive or defensive poses and movements, and yelling to exert force or intimidate an imaginary opponent.
Kung Fu Helps Kids Practice Focusing
Practicing Kung Fu teaches children to stay calm and focused, and helps them understand the power of mind over body. Focus is the core of learning any martial art art. For example, when kids become distracted, Tina will ask them to take a "ready stance." This prompts the students to refocus and get ready for the next step.
Kung Fu Focuses on Individual Growth, Not Competition
Many kids struggle with the pressure of competing with other kids, and some are discouraged because they feel like they never "win" anything. It can be especially hard to find a sport that works for kids who learn and think differently. Tina creates an inclusive environment for her Kung Fu classes because the focus is on self-improvement, not competition. Each child works toward a set goal at their own pace. Every time a child reaches a new skill level, they are awarded a different colored belt. This type of reward boosts self-esteem and fosters motivation. Students are encouraged to support each other in class, and negativity is not allowed.
Kung Fu Fosters Self-Control
Tina does not teach sparring in her Kung Fu classes. Using an "angry face" and punching, chopping, and kicking (the air) all allow children to express frustration or anger in a safe space. Venting aggression this way helps kids master self-control in other situations. It is important to note that Kung Fu practice does not encourage violent behavior: In fact, all Chinese martial arts emphasize the concept that fighting is used only as a last resort.
Kung Fu Teaches Respect
Respect is a core value of Kung Fu; good behavior is emphasized both in class and in other environments. Like all great martial arts coaches, Tina has clear class rules and constantly reinforces them, so participation fosters respect for her and for classmates.
